Survey questions:

Autoandrophilia Survey

Autoandrophilia is defined as a woman’s propensity to be aroused by the thought or image of herself as a man. I have asked you to participate in this survey because you, in a previous survey, have reported some degree of autoandrophilia (even if just a little bit), as I want to better document how autoandrophilia functions.

The prevalence of autoandrophilia is unknown; in my surveys on reddit, I’ve found rates around 50%, which would imply that half of all women on reddit are autoandrophilic. However, this seems unlikely, since the concept is not very well documented, and surely *someone* would have noticed it if the rates were this high. Other estimates I’ve seen include 12%, 6%, and less than 1%.

In some of the questions, I will ask you to provide some text explaining your feelings and opinions on the topics. I encourage you to take some thought and write as much as you know, because this will help me understand autoandrophilia better. However, please don’t feel that you have to write something if you have nothing to write; I’d rather have a response with few details than no response at all.

Basics

Gender

What gender do you identify as? (Of the people who’ve taken my previous surveys and reported AAP, I’ve only included those who identified as women at the time. However, your situation may have changed since then.)

Options: Female, Other (text input)

Autoandrophilia Content

Here are some examples of what autoandrophilia might include. How many of your sexual fantasies involve the following?

Options: radio button grid, where for each item one can select between “None”, “A few”, “Some”, “Most”, “All/almost all”. It had the following items:

  • Picturing yourself with a penis
  • Picturing yourself with a masculine/male body shape
  • Picturing yourself having sex with a woman while having a male body
  • Picturing yourself as a feminine gay man
  • Picturing yourself presenting in a more masculine way (e.g. clothes/crossdressing, hair, etc.)
  • Picturing yourself with androgynous sex characteristics

Not much is known about autoandrophilia and how it usually presents, which can be a problem. Can you describe the last autoandrophilic fantasy you had, or, if you don’t remember, describe what a typical autoandrophilic fantasy might look like?

Options: text input

Sexual Orientation

What do you identify as your sexual orientation?

Options: radio buttons to choose between “Heterosexual”, “Bisexual”, “Homosexual” and “Asexual”, along with an “other” text input.

Sexual Attraction Patterns

How attracted are you to the following groups of people?

Options: radio button grid, where for each item one can select between “Not at all”, “A little”, “Moderately”, “Quite” and “Very”. It had the following items:

  • Men (in general)
  • Women (in general)
  • Very Feminine/Androgynous Men
  • Very Masculine/Butch/Androgynous Women

Autoandrophilia

Autoandrophilia Onset

When did you first start having autoandrophilic fantasies?

Options: radio buttons to choose between:

  • From the beginning of my sexuality
  • After exploring my sexuality for a while
  • After a significant event in my life
  • Other

Do you remember anything about the onset that you can describe in more detail?

Options: text input.

Repressing Autoandrophilia

Have you ever tried to repress or get rid of your autoandrophilia?

Options: radio buttons to pick between “No”, “Not seriously”, “Yes” and “Desperately”.

If yes, how did you try to repress it? And what was the effect of doing this?

Options: text input.

Would you get rid of your autoandrophilia if you could?

Options: radio buttons to pick between “Definitely not”, “No”, “Don’t know/maybe/kinda”, “Yes” and “Definitely yes”.

Gender feelings

While most autoandrophilic women are happy with being women, they do have a noticeably greater desire to be male than average, and this desire seems proportional to the strength of their autoandrophilia. Have you noticed any such desire to be male in yourself, e.g. have you ever considered transitioning to live as male? How do you interpret it? Do you think the gender feelings cause the autoandrophilia, or that the autoandrophilia causes the gender feelings?

Options: text input.

Causes

Causes of Autoandrophilia

Soon, I will list some proposed causes of autoandrophilia and ask what you think of them. But first, I want to hear, what do you think has caused it? I am especially interested in what you thought before this survey.

Options: text input.

Erotic Target Identity Inversion

Autoandrophilia has been conceptualized as an “erotic target identity inversion”, which is a fancy way of saying that one becomes attracted to having the traits that one would otherwise be attracted to on a sexual partner. How well do you think this model describes your autoandrophilia?

Options: radio buttons to pick between “Very badly”, “Badly”, “Neither especially well nor especially badly”, “Well”, “Very well”.

Do you have any comments to the idea of describing your autoandrophilia as an ETII?

Options: text input.

Other ETIIs

The exist other such ETIIs. The most classical example is that some straight men become aroused when imagining themselves as women, but there also exist others. For example, some amputee fetishist become aroused when imagining themselves as amputees, some zoophiles become aroused when imagining themselves as animals, and some pedophiles become aroused when imagining themselves as children. Do you have any other sexual interests in having some specific traits like this?

Options: text input.

Desire for Control

Instead of ETIIs, some people instead link autoandrophilia to a desire for sexual control. In this model, the central elements of the AAP is not being male per se, but instead the control that being the stronger, bigger, penetrating person gives. How well do you think this model describes your autoandrophilia?

Options: radio buttons to pick between “Very badly”, “Badly”, “Neither especially well nor especially badly”, “Well”, “Very well”.

Do you have any comments on the idea of describing your AAP as a desire for control?

Options: text input.

Discomfort with Men

The desire for control may be linked to whether one has had bad experiences with men. How do you feel about being around men?

Options: radio button grid, where for each item one can select between “Disagree Strongly”, “Disagree”, “Neither Agree nor Disagree”, “Agree”, “Agree Strongly”. The items were:

  • I find men intimidating
  • I am completely comfortable being around men
  • I have bad experiences with men
  • I prefer being around men to being around women
  • Many men are dangerous to be around

Have you had any negative experiences with men that you would link to your autoandrophilia?

Options: text input.

Obsession with Sex-Change

A third proposed cause of autoandrophilia is that it might be caused by an obsession with changing sex, perhaps arising as a result of having too many transgender friends, encountering a lot of transgender-related things on social media, or similar. How well do you think this applies to your situation?

Options: radio buttons to pick between “Very badly”, “Badly”, “Neither especially well nor especially badly”, “Well”, “Very well”.

Do you have any thoughts on this model for explaining your autoandrophilia?

Options: text input.

Transgender/Nonbinary Friends

How many transgender/nonbinary people do you personally know?

Options: text input.

Gender Nonconformity or Lesbianism

Some people propose that autoandrophilia might be caused by being gender nonconforming or a lesbian, perhaps combined with some internalized sexism saying that only men can be masculine or attracted to women. How well does this explain your situation?

Options: radio buttons to pick between “Very badly”, “Badly”, “Neither especially well nor especially badly”, “Well”, “Very well”.

Do you have any thoughts on this as an explanation of your autoandrophilia?

Options: text input.

Gender Nonconformity

Do you see yourself as being very gender nonconforming?

Options: radio buttons to pick between “Definitely not”, “No”, “Don’t know/maybe/kinda”, “Yes”, and “Definitely yes”.

Gender Feelings During Your Life

Childhood Autoandrophilia

Some people find that aspects of their sexuality shows up during their childhood, not necessarily as an overtly sexual thing, but perhaps instead as a fascination. For example, I know a guy who is sexually very into restraints, and during his childhood he was very fascinated with ropes, chains and being stuck. Did you have any echoes of autoandrophilia in your childhood? If yes, in what ways?

Options: text input.

Adolescent Autoandrophilia

Do you think your autoandrophilia affected your feelings about adolescence and puberty? If you experienced autoandrophilia at that time, how did this affect your view of yourself?

Options: text input.

Gender Nonconformity and Life Choices

How gender conforming have you been throughout your life? Are you in a male-dominated, female-dominated, or equal field?

Options: text input.

Sexuality

Autoandrophilia’s Relation to the Rest of Your Sexuality

Does your autoandrophilia have any parallels in the rest of your sexuality? How does it interact with your sexuality? If you are attracted to women, does this then relate to your autoandrophilia in some way? How about attraction to feminine men?

Options: text input.

Acting on Autoandrophilia

Have you ever acted on your autoandrophilia in a sexual situation? What was it like?

Options: text input.

Other Paraphilias

Do you have any other unusual sexual interests?
